Guru-Shishya Parampara
Guru-Shishya Parampara is an ancient Indian tradition. For the purpose of learning/education and to pay his devotion to the Guru. In the Indian culture, a teacher is not only considered as an idol to learn from, but also a guide who nurtures and helps develop his students personality and shows them the right path.
In India, Guru Puja is performed since Vedic times and it still continues to do so. The knowledge of music and dance is bestowed upon the students by the teacher/guru himself. It is believed that Bharat muni obtained the knowledge of dance from Lord Shankar when Tandu muni told him to do so, and later on Bharat taught hundreds of his students and thus dance started evolving on the Earth.

Around the age of 6-7, a student usually starts obtaining the knowledge of dance from his guru. In older times, a guru would accept a child as his student only if he thought the child was capable of learning the art form. The Guru imparted knowledge to the student of a particular gharana, and it was then expected of the student to progress ahead by preaching and spreading the knowledge of his gharana only. The gharana of the student could be easily guessed/ known by his performance. It is a student's responsibility to enhance self-study and flourish himself with the knowledge he has received from his teacher and be grateful for the same. The tradition of Guru-Shishya-Parampara since Vedic times has still maintained its importance in today's modern life. Guru-Shishya-Parampara also forms the base of “Taalim and Riyaaz / ताऱीम और ररयाज़” which are of extreme importance in the life of a dancer.
